Our History

Historical Background

The organization was founded in 2020 by a Kenyan Pastor,
Dr. Richard Mutura after a tour of Kakuma Refugee camp in Northern arid lands of Kenya. The visit followed an invitation by one of his students at Pan Africa Christian University who was a refugee from South Sudan. He was curious to know how life was in the camps, and he drove for two days to Kakuma

It was while at the camp, that he identified the need to help train refugee pastors. In his assessment, he realized that majority of them had less than 8th-grade level of education and theological education but were passionate to overcome their own trauma and preach hope to fellow refugees. The Holy Spirit put it in his heart that he can contribute to supporting the pastors to upgrade their knowledge and skills of the bible and church to correctly handle the word of God and engage their congregations in holistic ministry.

Thrill of Hope

After a prayerful reflection, he decided to start a short-term course on Discipleship Reframed. When he visited the camp the second time to start the pastors’ training, one woman approached him after a session and said, “I am happy you are training and empowering pastors but what about us, if only I can get a sewing machine, I can be able to recover my life and support my children.” This request brought about another program; the Women Empowerment Program for the extremely poor. Today CTC runs two main programs at Kakuma refugee camp: The Discipleship Reframed training for pastors and leaders, and the women’s Economic empowerment programs.

Historical Background

Twenty-two (22) pastors have successfully completed a course on discipleship-reframed and twenty (20) women in tailoring and sewing. We work with over thirty churches in Kenya. The organization plans to reach over 200 pastors and 1000 poor Christian households in the refugee camps. We also intend to expand the programs to the informal settlements of Nairobi and remote areas of rural Kenya. In Eastern Africa, we have missionaries in Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Burundi where some groundwork currently taking place.
